Two Essentials

In the Arab world, we have a new threat (as they call it now)! Not a militarily threat of course, but it’s an identity threat. Some say that the English language and the spread of it in the Arab world is becoming a problem. I know they have their reasons and they are solid, but I totally disagree with them and with the whole concept. They call it an invasion, the awful attack on the Arabic language and on Arabs, they call it a problem!!!

Don’t get me wrong! I’m a big supporter of the Arabic language! It’s an amazing language and we as Arabs must learn and study our own language, but what’s wrong with having and learning another language! Some argue that speaking and learning English will erase our own language! How can a new language erase the language that I’ve been using my whole life!! In the modern world, we need to be more flexible with language. I’m not saying we have to change everything, but we have to explore new horizons and learn new things every day.  One of the most important things that we have to learn in our lives is a new language! Learning English won’t affect our Arabic and it sure won’t affect our identity.

On the other hand, we have to learn Arabic. It’s our language. As Arabs, we are recognized as people who speak Arabic. So, we can’t ignore our language just because we learned a new language! I know a lot of people who learned new languages and in the same time kept their own language. Our English professor, Dr. Rizwan Ahmad, speaks both English and Arabic fluently. He’s from India and he can write and read perfect and even old Arabic. Learning a new language didn’t affect his mother-language (Urdu). People can learn and master two or even more languages. The more you learn, the more flexible you are in communicating with the world.

Learning English in something you have to do now. English will help us a lot. Students and even businessmen will benefit a lot from learning English. It will help them communicate with the world and it will make their jobs much easier. Even in Kuwait, we need to learn English if we want a good job. Employees who know English have more job opportunities.

We can’t and won’t erase our Arabic language because we are Arabs and it’s our identity. If we learn both Arabic and English in the same time, then it won’t be a problem! It won’t be a threat!

Arabic is a rich language, but there are many more. We have to explore new languages and discover the beauty of learning a new thing, a new experience, and a new language!

The Art of Public Speaking

If you’re s student or a worker, you will have to master this skill. If you want to perform an actual presentation or just speak in public, it’s important that YOU master this skill. It’s not easy to do so, but there are ways and methods to help you be a good public speaker. I will talk about these methods and support them with a personal story.

Nearly every public speaker gets nervous. It’s in our human nature to do so and that’s a big problem for a public speaker. But the important part in not having the problem, it’s how you solve this problem and overcome your stage fright. Although people have different levels of this fear, they all can overcome this problem with the same methods! Like for example, Obama overcame his fears a long time ago .. He always said that he used to get nervous when doing presentations in college. Being nervous and having a panic attack when doing your presentation is a normal thing that happens to every public speaker. It’s actually a given! If you can feel nervousness, YOU ARE ALIVE!

Now, how can we overcome this fear?! The answer is simple, PRACTICE. When you practice your speech, you will master every aspect of it. You will know when to stop and when to lower your voice. If you make a lot of mistakes, you will notice them in when you practice so that you can solve them before doing the actual presentation. Practicing your presentation is the best way to overcoming your fear. Because when you know what you will say, you limit the number of mistakes in your presentation.

Although practice will help master or at least sketch your presentation, it won’t eliminate your fear or the nervousness that you will feel while doing a presentation.

While doing a presentation or even practicing for one, take a deep breath and think about the audience for a second there! They are people just like you and they will feel the same nervousness that you will feel if they are in your place. Let your brain believe that you are doing a presentation to aliens that can’t feel anything. That way if you stumble or mistake a word, no one will care! Because they are ALIENS! To think about it, does the audience care about your mistakes or even judge you when you make one!? The obvious answer is NO! People will not care about your mistakes. They will not judge you if you mistake the whole presentation or if you stumble while saying a complicated word. They JUST DON’T CARE!!!! So, when you think about how they don’t care about what you will do in the presentation, you will not care about them or their judgment! The whole goal for listening to a speaker is to get entertained, so as a speaker you have to do just that without caring about others judgment!

After joining the American University of Kuwait, I was introduced to the world of public speaking. I never did a presentation (how sad is that) before. 12 years of attending and learning about how we (Muslims) were once rolling the world of science, we never had a presentation! And I think that this is the main problem or reason for this fear that we feel now. We never had to do a presentation and suddenly we have to do one in front of people I don’t know!! That will increase our fear and nervousness!! I’m talking about students from government high schools and not privet. We didn’t know anything about public speaking or how to perform one! At AUK I was asked to do a presentation in my first week. I was nervous and scared, but I didn’t want to think about this fear and just enjoy my time doing something I never did before. That was actually what my teacher (Robert Hobbs) said: “enjoy your presentation. Entertain yourself before entertaining us”. And that’s what I did. My first presentation was a 5 minute presentation about myself. I really didn’t know what to say about myself. I asked the teacher for help!! Hobbs suggested that I should write the whole presentation and then rather than memorizing it, study it. That’s the second method for overcoming your stage fright. Writing you presentation on paper and then adding the main bullet points of your presentation.

I wrote the whole presentation and the main points that I will talk about. After studying and knowing what I’m going to say, I was confidence. This method helped me a lot because it made me realize that a presentation is similar to an essay. When you write an essay, you need certain things that will improve your essay. The same thing goes with a presentation. In an essay, you will begin with the introduction, then the body, and finally the conclusion. In a presentation, you will do the same thing. It will help a lot and even if you didn’t actually say the same thing you wrote, at least you said something!

Public speaking is a fun world, a fun experience, and a fun hobby do master. I would like to be a regular speaker, so that I’m always practicing and improving this skill. In AUK (The American University of Kuwait), I’m sure that I will do many more presentation and I thank them for that. I never knew how to do so and now I’m actually good at it. There is a class here in AUK, an English class which is only about public speaking. English 108. I really recommend taking this subject (I’m taking it this semester). Like my former teacher said: “life is all about having fun with education and the best example is when you do a presentation”.

Between two Hobbies!!

Back in 1999, when I first started using the computer and the internet, I was doing two main things. I first started writing in forums and message boards. All I did in write sport-related topics and reply on others topics. I never thought of expanding my writing to an actual blog. Because at that time, blogs where not that popular. With writing, came the need to design! I used to sit there and just try to figure out what to do! Adobe Photoshop was the perfect program to do so. My aim was to mix writing with designing in a creative way. For example, I didn’t want to only write a post or a topic in a plane and boring environment. I couldn’t do that in a forum. So the obvious choice was to build and design my own website.

It’s not easy to build a website. In order to build one, you need to learn how to design. Whether it’s on Photoshop or other designing programs, you have to learn at least one of them. Then, you have to build your actual website from scratch! Every little detail. It’s not easy to do, but after 11 years of experience it becomes a daily job for me. And because I liked to write and design, the best venue to do these two things is opining a blog! That’s what I did and I enjoyed writing every post. As you can see I change the design of the blog every now and then.

So, these two things are my main hobbies in life. Of course playing soccer is also my hobby, but I can’t be a soccer player especially in Kuwait! And if these two hobbies had a huge impact on my life, WHY I’m a Finance-major student!? Why not Graphic design?! Why nor Journalism?!

The simple answer is MONEY! Those two jobs are considered as “lower-wage” jobs and they can’t compete with the high wages that are given in any Finance-related jobs. Don’t get me wrong, I love Finance. I love business in general. But I always thought that my college major will be a one I liked the most. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the cause for me!

Now, I can’t change the past and I don’t want to. So, my only solution is to minor in one of these two majors and if you ask me which one I prefer, I will pick Journalism!! Because I can design a blog or a website anytime and without actually having a degree in it, but I think that I need to study how to become a professional writer. So, let’s hope I can minor in it!

‘Remember Me’ – movie review

Starring: Robert Pattinson, Emilie de Ravin, Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper.

This heartbreaking romantic drama is set in New York City, where Tyler (Robert Pattinson), a rebellious young man, meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin) through a twist of fate. Her spirit helps him heal after a great family tragedy, but soon, the circumstances that brought them together threaten to tear them apart.

Remember Me was so far the best movie I’ve seen this year and had me crying my heart out. I’d be surprised to hear of someone who saw it and didn’t cry through the whole thing!

Not only is the actors’ performances strongly moving in this movie, but the story also puts a lot in perspective and shows how every big or small thing we do in our lives and towards those we love, can have a huge impact even long after we’re gone.

Like Ghandi says: “Whatever you do in life will be insignificant, but it’s very important that you do it.”

I suggest you take a whole lot of tissue and make sure you have a cheer up plan set up for afterwards! .. Seriously worth watching though.

Determination At Its Best: An Inspirational Story

If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.

J.P. beleived in that philosophy.

Directly across the street from where I live in Champaign, Illinois, there is the 18 story tall Burnham building. The recently finished apartment building is one of the tallest buildings on the University of Illinois campus. So when my friend called me to tell me that a PhD student had jumped from the 18th floor of the Burnham building, the first thought that popped into my head was “he chose the right building”.

Emergency workers respond to the report of a person who jumped Thursday from an upper floor of the 18-story Burnham310 building in Champaign.

This man used a fire extinguisher to break a window in the 18th floor hallway. He then jumped, intending to commit suicide. Unfortunately for him, he landed on the ceiling of a four story adjacent building. He was not dead (ironic imprecision from a Civil Engineering PhD student). But being the determined man he is, J.P. got up, dusted himself off, and jumped again from the 4th floor. Unfortunately, he AGAIN did not die.

60 seconds later an ambulance picked the man up, and looked optimistic to save his life. But J.P. was strong and determined enough to finish off the job in time. He was finally successful. He died in surgery.

J.P’s determination will live on, even though it was the thing that ultimately killed him.

The End.

MS Treatment – Stolen Hope?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a nervous system disease that affects your brain and spinal cord. It damages the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and protects your nerve cells. This damage slows down or blocks messages between your brain and your body, leading to the symptoms of MS. They can include:

  • Visual disturbances
  • Muscle weakness
  • Trouble with coordination and balance
  • Sensations such as numbness, prickling, or “pins and needles”
  • Thinking and memory problems

No one knows what causes MS. It may be an autoimmune disease, which happens when your body attacks itself. Multiple sclerosis affects women more than men. It often begins between the ages of 20 and 40. Usually, the disease is mild, but some people lose the ability to write, speak or walk.

This disease was once very rare in Kuwait, but the number of MS patients in Kuwait has escalated rapidly to 18,000 cases of Kuwaiti Nationality only. No one knows why the number of MS patients has grown so viciously in recent years, but the effects of MS on its victims are brutal. Any possible neurological symptoms can affect an MS patient, including but not limited to, extensive depression which can even lead to eventual suicide.

However, when Dr Paolo Zamboni’s wife, an Italian professor of medicine in the University of Ferrara, was diagnosed with this disease, he was determined to find a cure. In 1995, Dr Zamboni discovered a breakthrough that can change the lives of all MS patients drastically.

What was once seen as a potentially debilitating neurological disease and an autoimmune condition was proven to be a vascular disease.

Since 1995 no one has believed in Dr Zamboni’s research. But thanks to the strong faith of our skilled doctors, here in our own country, a clinical trial had begun little over a month ago in Mubarak AlKabeer Hospital.

Dr Tariq Sinan, Dr Abdulaziz AlMuzaini and Dr Hussain Saffar have successfully conducted their clinical trial on 12 MS patients. All 12 cases have witnessed miraculous results. Patients were able to move again and have full function of their limbs. Limbs which have been immobile for years.

The entire procedure takes no more than 15 minutes. 15 minutes that can change thousands of people’s lives and end their suffering. The procedure is pretty simple. They begin by preforming a doppler, a sonar investigation, and an MRI of the veins, to see if there is a narrowing in the neck veins, then go on to dilating the veins to relive pressure. The patient is cured instantly on the table once the dilation is complete.

Patients who have not been able to walk due to loosing sense in their legs are now able to wiggle their toes and weep at the sight. Patients who have not been able to feed themselves because of lost sensory in their arms are now eating happily and independently.

Dr Zamboni has come up with a miraculous cure that no one had considered, and Dr Sinan, Dr Almuzaini and Dr Saffar have begun to spread the cure here in Kuwait.

So.. where’s the problem, right?

If a cure has been found, a clinical trial has been conducted with successful results.. then where’s the problem?

That’s what everyone is asking the Health Minister of Kuwait after he ordered the clinical trial to be shut down.

Why cut off the only hope all these young patients had? The excuse so far is that the trial is still considered in its research stages and the minister has deemed it “risky”. Where the sense in that is, I don’t know!

I mean, the doctors conducting the trial are extremely capable and have taken out all the necessary research! Other than the fact that all 12 cases have gone through successfully, the trial is ethically permitted since all patients sign a form of responsibility in entering the trial, after the risks have been explained to them fully!

So, where’s the problem?!

Everyone’s still waiting for an answer. Why ban a treatment which thousands of Kuwaitis and residents in Kuwait need so desperately? People are suffering. Young people. Their lives have been halted; they can’t walk, speak, remember the people around them, feed or dress themselves.. they can’t recognize their own children, get married, work, or lead independent lives.. and all that can stop. All that can be cured. For 12 lucky people, all that has already been cured.

We are asking the minister of health to give the doctors back their ability to heal. Give the people their ability to speak, walk and remember. .. Give back these unfortunate people the chance to live. To live a normal healthy life where they can build themselves and their lives anew. This clinical trial is the only shimmer of light they’ve got to hope on for a cure. So give them the option to choose it. These patients have nothing left to lose.. and they are willing to bet on any prayer they may come across. Give these patients the chance to choose for themselves whether it’s a risk they’re willing to take.

If your loved one is suffering from MS, or you know someone who is, join Scope TV in their petition to continue with the clinical trial. Contact parliament representatives, anyone who can help you push for treatment, and get the people you love the treatment they need.

Thank you Dr Sinan, Dr AlMuzaini and Dr Saffar for fighting for these patients and hopefully, you will have the opportunity to cure a thosand more than just 12 MS patients here in Kuwait.

Book Review: Sneaker Wars

From a small town called Herzogenarach in germany, the history of sport accessories was established. Many know Adidas as this greedy corporate company, but the truth is that this company was build to serve the people. The goal was to deliver the best for the best and they kept doing so since then.

Adidas, began when Adi dasler opened his small shoe store with his partner/brother Rudi. They established their store and were known for their high-quality shoes. They were sponsoring the best German athletes. The famous three strips football shoes were considered to be the best shoe at that time. Basically, all of the German national team was sponsored by Adidas, players and staff members.

After a while, problems accrue between the two brothers and to the result were they broke their partnership. Adi stayed in his original store (Adidas) and Rudolf established another shoe store called Puma. Their feud wrote the history of these big companies.

You will enjoy reading this book! If you are a football fan or a regular buyer of one of these brands (Adidas, Puma) you will enjoy this book. The book provides the basic history for these two companies from the establishment of their first store to the problem that broke them apart. And by breaking their partnership, they changed the history of sports.

I had a blast reading this book. Specially, that I’m a huge fan of Adidas and their football products.
