Book Review: Death and the Penguin

Recently I’ve been reading novels and fictional stories, and if you know me, you’ll know that novels is not my cup of tea! But after getting bored of all the non-fictional books that I have, I’ve decided that my 2011/2012 book list will focus on novels only.

One of the first novels I’ve read this year is the brilliant work of Andrey Kurkov, Death and the Penguin. The book talks about a poor, unlucky writer in post-soviet Ukraine. This writer was unemployed and suddenly gets a great opportunity with a big newspaper. But with this new job comes many consequences that will change his life forever.

Kurkov well-put action sequences and dark writing helps the story, specially that he’s writing about a very dark period. I’ve enjoyed his take on the common man and how one’s dreams can be his nightmares!!

A great read! 8/10

Book Review: First, Last and Only: Football

This book is for the hardcore football fans that want to increase their knowledge in their game. A little book, “First, Lasts, and Onlys: Football Facts from the last 150 years” is a book for the fans and written by a fan. Paul Donnelley is a huge fan of football and clearly, after reading his book, you’ll know and understand that this man knows his football and enjoys writing about it.

A fun read.. full of fun, interesting football facts that will be useful ..when bragging about knowing these facts, in front of your friends (you will be the only one who knows these facts).

You can find this book in Virgin Kuwait and other bookstores. Enjoy. Bo Ali

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

القراءة عنصر أساسي و طبيعي في دمي .. فـ من خلال القراءة أرى العالم .. و لكنني دايماً أحبذ قراءة الكتب المعلوماتية و هي التي تحتوي على المعلومة .. و لا أحبذ قرائة الرواية .. هناك طبعاً استثناءات عديدة .. و هذه الرواية أستطيع أن اصفها على أنها رواية إستثنائية بكل تأكيد

قصة رائعة عن أب يفقد ولده خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية .. و وسط معمعة الحرب يريد هذا الأب الحزين الإنتقام لموت ولده المأساوي .. قصة درامية رائعة تحتوي على العديد من الأحداث الغير متوقعة

كنت دائماً أمل عندما أقرأ رواية درامية .. لكن من خلال هذه الرواية .. رويت عطشي الأبدي لقراءة كل ما يتعلق بالحرب العالمية الثانية بالإضافة إلى قراءة قصة درامية مثيرة

بالإضافة إلى أن هذا الكتاب عزيز علي .. لأن قصة شرائي لهذا الكتاب .. قصة سـ تكون خالدة في قلبي و حياتي دوماً

قراءة رائعة .. و كتاب يستحق الشراء

و هو عبارة عن كتاب يروي تاريخ كرة القدم الإنجليزية .. منذ بدايتها المتواضعة و إلى يومنا هذا .. أتوقع أنني سـ أستمتع بقراءة هذا الكتاب الذي كنت أريد منذ فترة أن أبدأ فيه لحبي الأبدي لكرة القدم و لـ إنجلترا

From a small town called Herzogenarach in germany, the history of sport accessories was established. Many know Adidas as this greedy corporate company, but the truth is that this company was build to serve the people. The goal was to deliver the best for the best and they kept doing so since then.

Adidas, began when Adi dasler opened his small shoe store with his partner/brother Rudi. They established their store and were known for their high-quality shoes. They were sponsoring the best German athletes. The famous three strips football shoes were considered to be the best shoe at that time. Basically, all of the German national team was sponsored by Adidas, players and staff members.

After a while, problems accrue between the two brothers and to the result were they broke their partnership. Adi stayed in his original store (Adidas) and Rudolf established another shoe store called Puma. Their feud wrote the history of these big companies.

You will enjoy reading this book! If you are a football fan or a regular buyer of one of these brands (Adidas, Puma) you will enjoy this book. The book provides the basic history for these two companies from the establishment of their first store to the problem that broke them apart. And by breaking their partnership, they changed the history of sports.

I had a blast reading this book. Specially, that I’m a huge fan of Adidas and their football products.

Another masterpiece from Virgin Megastore!

I visited their one and only store in Kuwait .. the MEGA store as they call it .. although I strongly disagree that that average-size store can be called a MEGA store, but of course I’m not gonna write a whole topic about their store size.

What I’m gona talk about today is their new DC/Batman masterpiece ..!

The Batman Vault: A Museum-in-a-Book Featuring Rare Collectibles from the Batcave !

A massive book/magazine .. that is mainly about BATMAN .. but you won’t see in this book the story of Batman .. Instead you will learn and read about the history of Batman’s Comic.. from old comics, to the first appearance of Batman in Detective  Comics .. You will find everything in this book ..

And if you’re a Batman Fan .. you will learn all about the ART of Batman, and how they came up with his costume. Robin, his sidekick has his share in the book. The most interesting thing in the book was that they explained why Robin became Night-wing and the reason for changing his custom from Red/Yellow to Black/Blue. These types of books can be useful if you want to understand the legacy of Batman and most importantly if you read all of Batman’s Comics and you still didn’t understand the story line, then this is the perfect book for you . You will enjoy every page of this book, I did.

We need more of these types of books, which explain a character’s story. Because when you read comics.. sometimes you can’t just understand from what we see or even read .. the idea or the main point of the comic is usually implied and for a rich character like Batman, you need to know everything about the character to understand why did he do that or we didn’t Batman kill the Joker .. although the clown killed the second Robin .. there are other important questions every Batman fan must know and this book will answer all of those questions.

An Amazing book .. if you’re a Batman fan this is a MUST-BUY item!

Review: The DC Comics Encyclopedia

Last weekend .. i went with bo jasim (JUST TRUTH) to VIRGIN MEGA STORES .. to see what’s new .. even if the day before we were there ..
We were walking towards the books section .. when one of the workers ( the famous redhead ) .. pointed at me .. and asked me if i wanted the DC comics Encyclopedia book .. !!

After the 20 seconds ( to understand what happened ), i smiled ..
the story began two weeks ago when i asked if they had this book .. and they told me that they don’t have it (yet) .. i didn’t give them my number or anything .. BUT this weekend .. she told me that the book that i wanted and asked for .. had arrived and i can see it there .. !!

first of all, I’m really pleased with their service .. and how they didn’t forget .. now that’s what i call a good service .. !! i want to thank her ( the redhead ) for that .. i don’t know her name .. but everyone knows her as the redhead who works in VIRGIN .. Thank you for remembering me .. !!

Today, i went and bought the book .. a huge book mainly about DC comics .. from characters .. to stories .. you can find every thing you want .. every detail .. every character and every aspect of The DC universe .. !!

I’ve looked at it quickly .. and of course i began reading the BATMAN section .. it’s amazing how they’ve included every little detail .. from the first Batman adventure .. to the death of the 2nd Rubin ..

there were other books .. about Marvel Comics .. but i didn’t even care to look at them .. !! I’m a DC guy .. always have and always will .. !!

the 400 page book gives you a bigger, more detailed and larger view at DC Universe .. it even has all of the unknown characters that I’ve never heard of .. like: King of Tears / LONAR / Night Master .. and many more ..

i really recommend this book .. if your a long-time fan or even a first-timer .. you have to buy this book ..
I’m still reading .. i didn’t finish half of it .. it will be a thrill .. finishing it .. !!

the only downfall was that they didn’t dig deep with some characters .. ( lack of detail ) .. but that didn’t matter .. because when you are a (Batman-ONLY) fan .. it wont matter .. !!
